TOPIC: Protagonists in IBD and Holes
Introductory Paragraph Hook: How would you fare if you were placed in a life and death situation which depended upon your survival skills?
Background Information: discuss the Survival genre, which began with Robinson Crusoe, but maybe even earlier with Jonah and the whale
Two Items to be Compared/Contrasted: name books, characters, immediate similarities |
Thesis: each character had strengths and personalities which allowed them to survive
First Item/Topic Sentence: description of how Karana came to be stranded
First Point of Contrast: setting = deserted island
Example: once her people left, Karana had to do all jobs usually done by the village
Second Point of Contrast: skills
Example: she had many (describe) but she had to problem solve and learn some new skills
Third Point of Contrast: challenges, obstacles
Example: wild dogs, devilfish, return of Aleuts, natural disasters
Closing Sentence: talk about her ability to adapt
Second Item/Topic Sentence: description of how Stanley came to be at Camp Green Lake
First Point of Contrast: setting = camp for boys
Example: some descriptions of camp and animals
Second Point of Contrast: skills
Example: Stanley had few, but bartered a skill (reading) for hole digging; his personality also helped him
Third Point of Contrast: challenges, obstacles
Example: dealing with Mr. Sir and The Warden, digging holes, surviving trip to Big Thumb
Closing Sentence: describe how luck also helped
Conclusion Topic Sentence: how unexpected events led to their predicaments
Other Point of View Acknowledged: some people might think that all you need to survive is courage
Summary Sentence: both characters met their challenges head on
Now That This is Known... (how does this information benefit the reader, or anyone else?) we see that some characters are more likely to survive than others based upon their skills and abilities to adapt to changing situations
