Winning is Everything?

Bianca Pineda

Winning is everything. Or is it? So many events in life have a score, that life is a competition. Can't we just relax and play... I don't know, for fun? I mean, some people take it too seriously. Also, they create an ego which can lead to a big head (which is never good). And I've heard people say "You play to win." which is the worst part. Games are made to have fun! You should play to enjoy it, not to win it.

When I say 'some people take it too seriously', I am NOT kidding. I've seen events happen when a player didn't make a shot in basket ball, and his teammates got upset with him. Like, WHO CARES? At least he tried! People get so competitive it isn't even fun anymore. Some people won't want to play at all  anymore. In a few cases, I've had to let a person win. I've found a worse pet peeve than public grooming: sore losers.

On the other hand, players get too big an ego. Not just in sports, but when I was younger I heard a person brag about beating their parents in every Monopoly game they've ever played. 'We don't need to know that'  I thought. I just hate it when people gloat about their achievements to get attention. Also, people brag. Isn't it just downright annoying when other people gloat about their winnings? Another thing that bugs me is that in a team sport, I don't understand why the star player gets all the credit. Isn't it at TEAM sport?Do you know what's even worse? Imagine this: An NFL Player has it all. A family, food, money, a home, but he blows it because he’s so obsessed with winning. He put it as his first priority and put it before everything important in his life. He lost EVERYTHING to something that gave him nothing.
Games are made to have fun. It’s a fact. If a minor league baseball team has Derek Jeter on their team and they beat every other league, would it still be winning? Your best efforts count even if you lose. I know, I know. That’s what your mother tells you when you lose. But it’s true. People get way to competitive when it doesn't have to be. Seriously, if the little league doesn’t have winners, what makes them think WE can handle it?
Even though a little competition won’t hurt the game, I wouldn’t say winning is EVERYTHING. Would you play the game just to win? People take it too seriously or create an ego. Even worse, both can happen when you let your mind focus on winning rather than having fun. You know how to solve this? Really, it's simple. No? Okay: JUST DON'T GET SO COMPETITIVE! It's not even that hard! Like I said in my last paragraph, games are MADE for fun. You should play to enjoy it, not to win it.
