7819sb HOWL Predator Essay

“King of the Beasts”

A new museum called the Hunters of the Wild Lands (HOWL) is seeking nomination for exhibits. To be placed at the museum, the museum directors are seeking predators that deserve to be recognized. "King of the beasts,"are what lions are referred to. Lions, wolves, falcons, and sharks are sure to come to mind when thinking of a predator. However the lion is one of the most skilled hunters in the world. I believe that the lion should be recognized in the HOWL Museum as they are very skilled cat predators.
Lions have sharp claws which makes it easy for them to catch their prey. These vicious and powerful predators capture their prey with their claws and those claws dig deep into the prey, which stops the prey from running away. Using their claws, lion could climb up trees. But the trouble is that, if lions climb up, its really hard to climbs back down. Sometimes lions jump off trees, if they are stuck! The dewclaw on the front limbs is often used as a toothpick, which helps the lion clean its teeth.
These beasts have great smell, hearing, and body structure. The eyes are well-adapted for use under very low light, such as in the dark. Lions mark their territories by using their smell. Using their smell, lions could smell a wounded animal from over 20 feet and then go to it and make it it's prey! The mane hair is stiff and wiry, like stiff horse hair. This protects lions from fights. Besides the primary role of protecting the male during fights, it has been discovered that female lions prefer males with bigger and darker manes. The lion's coat is ideal for hiding. It is brownish yellow, the

same color as dead grass.
Lions have sharp teeth, which is good to eat their prey easier. With their teeth, lions could rip their prey, which weakens it from running away. The teeth align with the prey, as there are no jaws, so the prey could be eaten easier too. Parts of the teeth are really strong that they work like scissors! A male lion can eat 75 pounds (34 kilograms) of meat in one meal. The big sharp teeth slip between the vertebrae and break the spinal cord. The lion could break a buffalo’s skull open with using it’s deadly teeth!
Even though people would expect other animals such as polar bears and wolves, l
ions are also skilled predators and hunt just like them. Vicious and bloody killers such as bald eagl
es and rattlesnakes may be more unique to people,

but because of their skills and unique body features lions shouldn't be ignored. Why exclude lions, when their such great predators? Because of its unique body features and deadly skills, this beast deserves recognition in the HOWL museum.
