Is Winning Everything?

by Olivia Anagnostis

There are many things to win in the world. Board games, the lottery, the prettiest girl in school, the big softball game you have this weekend. But do these things really mean everything? There is a problem with people thinking that winning is everything. One sore athletes, two expectations, and three, what about having fun? This is why people need to not base their life around winning.

Sore losers happen a lot. After that big game that they lost they throw the big hissy fit then stomp away. What if they didn't feel that winning was everything? If they just let the game go after they lost, just walked away. Everything would turn out fine. Oh, and after the sore loser there is the sore winner. Even a couple days after they won they are still rubbing it in your face. That is taking it to far. Then there is that undefeated team that has a game that they didn't need to practice for the game. What happens after that? They are sore losers because they became overconfident.

When your fans or even you set big expectations it always seems to go downhill. One day I had a big game. My teammates were so excited, I was too. In the last quarter of the game my friend missed the basket. That was are last chance to win the game. All of my teammates got so mad about it. I didn't get too upset because winning isn't everything. Also nobody is perfect. You can't always win. And what about stress? A girl had a big spelling bee. She was excited but

very very very nervous. She heard a rumor from one of the competitors that people were betting on who would win. She got really stressed out, so stressed that she didn't want to compete anymore.

What about having fun? If a coach takes a game too seriously and yells at the kids all the time the kids wouldn't have fun. Wouldn't you want a challenge. Let's say a 13 year-old took on a 6 year-old in a game of soccer. Who do you think would win? Does it matter if someone wins or not as long as they gave their best effort? A friend of my told me a story about how her cousin's field hockey team went up against a team three years older than them and the other team only won by 2 points. Would they be really upset that they lost or would they be really proud that they almost won?

Winning is great. It gives people something to celebrate and be happy about but is it really everything? I don't think so. There are so many times that someone can come close to winning and be proud about it. There are times when it is nice to win too but nobody is perfect. So what do you think? Is winning everything or not?
