The Hiking Trip

Robert Ramirez and his father had enjoyed hiking and camping out together ever since Robert was old enough to walk. Their favorite hiking trail was the Appalachian Trail which stretches from Maine to Georgia. They had never walked that far, of course but enjoyed the section of the trail that passed through their part of Pennsylvania.

Although his dad always picked the date, it was up to Robert to plan the meals, shop for the food, and get all the necessary supplies packed for the outing. Dad always insisted that Robert create a checklist so that nothing would be forgotten but sometimes Robert got lazy.

"If we forget anything it won't be a big deal!" Robert explained to his mother. "There are always other hikers around who will loan you a can opener or share their matches."

Mother just shook her head as if she disagreed but said nothing. She had firmly stated from the very beginning that these trips had nothing to do with her and she would not get involved. Mosquitoes, sore feet, and using a bush for the bathroom was not her idea of a vacation.

Robert checked the calendar. This weekend was their next trip, and here it was already Thursday! He had totally forgotten.

"No big deal," he said aloud, "I've packed our supplies a thousand times!"

"Sure you don't want to make a list?" asked his mother, sipping a cup of tea at the kitchen table.

"Never had a problem before!" Robert answered confidently. "Besides, if I forget one little thing what could possibly go so wrong?"

     If he only knew.

"Are we there yet?" Robert moaned. Robert's been on a bunch of camping trips, but this one was the most anticipating. They were camping at the Major Sight Camp Country Club, which was the best camping area in the United States! There were a lot of wildlife, including bears and wolves. So his father put pepper spray (to guard off the animals) on the top of the checklist.

"Don't worry, son, we'll be there in no time!" Mr. Ramirez exclaimed, "I just have to go to security. C'mon, get your school ID so they can 'identify us'."

"Sure, here it is." Robert handed his father the ID and gave it to the security guard along with his driver's license.

See, I knew I wouldn't forget anything! Robert thought.

The two walked over to their camping area. Robert was surprised at how beautiful the scenery was! They had a mountaintop view, and the whole forest behind them. Mr. Ramirez had reserved this campground for the best trip yet.

"Gorgeous! Well, I guess we better settle in if we want more time to watch that jaw-dropping view. Here, help me set up the tent." As Robert handed him the tent, he grinned for the thought that his mother was wrong for a change.

The whole night they went hiking, watched the stars, sat at the campfire, and everything was easy-going and as planned. Just before the two were about to go to bed, they heard a howling sound. They both assumed it was from a far distance, but as the howling started to get louder, Robert worried.

"Get the pepper spray, it sounds like a pack. Close the tent and wait here." As Robert searched for the pepper spray in his duffel, Mr. Ramirez started to get impatient.

     "C'mon! We're don't have much time, Sport."

"Dad, umm... I think I might've forgotten it. I'm really sorry."

"Robert Francis Ramirez! I think I've warned you about not being prepared, that's why we made a checklist. Even so, you neglected to check it." Mr. Ramirez was nothing close to pleased.

The two decided to hide in the tent, knowing that it wouldn't do much good against a pack of wolves.

"HEY! THIS IS RESTRICTED PERSONNEL ONLY! WHOEVER YOU ARE, GET OUT OF THE TENT!"

"Officer, we're sorry. I must've gone the wrong direction.!"
